Pap Smear Test

What Is a Pap Smear Test?

A Reliable Screening Method for Early Detection of Cervical Cancer

Pap Smear Test is a simple yet vital screening test that enables the early detection of cervical (cervix) cancer.
It helps detect precancerous cell changes in the cervix while they are still in the formation stage.
During the procedure, no pain or discomfort is felt, and it takes only a few seconds.

The FertiJin IVF Center in Şişli, Istanbul, performs regular screenings to protect women’s health with Pap Smear testing under the supervision of specialist gynecologists.

How Is a Pap Smear Test Performed?

Pap Smear test is performed during a gynecological examination and is usually completed within 3–5 minutes:

  1. Speculum application: The gynecologist gently opens the vagina to make the cervix visible.
  2. Cell sample collection: A cell sample is taken from the transformation zone of the cervix using a special brush or spatula.
  3. Laboratory examination: The collected sample is sent to the laboratory and analyzed under a microscope.

No pain is felt during the procedure; only a short-term pressure or mild discomfort may occur.

When Should a Pap Smear Test Be Performed?

  • It is recommended that every woman have a Pap Smear test 3 years after the first sexual intercourse or starting from the age of 21.
  • In women aged 21–30, having the test once a year is sufficient.
  • In women aged 30 and above, the test can be repeated 1–3 times per year if deemed appropriate by the gynecologist.

The test should not be performed during the menstrual period. The most appropriate time is the first week after menstrual bleeding ends.

Why Is a Pap Smear Test Performed?

Pap Smear is performed to detect cervical cancer at an early stage.
The test reveals abnormalities in cervical cells and allows treatment at the precancerous stage.

Test results are classified as follows:

  • ASC-US: There are mild changes in the cells, and the cause cannot be determined. Additional examination is required.
  • LSIL: There are mild abnormalities, usually associated with low-risk HPV infection.
  • HSIL: Serious cellular changes with a high risk of turning into cancer.
  • ASC-H: A high-risk condition similar to HSIL.
  • AGC: Changes are observed in different cell types, and further examination is recommended.

What Happens If the Pap Smear Test Result Is Positive?

A positive result does not necessarily mean cancer is present.
In this case, your gynecologist may request additional tests:

  • Colposcopy: Close examination of the cervix with a special device.
  • Biopsy: A small tissue sample is taken from suspicious cells and examined in the laboratory.
  • HPV test: The presence and type of the HPV virus are determined.

According to the results, early-stage cellular changes can be completely eliminated with treatment.

Pap Smear test is especially recommended in the following situations:

  • Women over the age of 21 who are sexually active
  • Those carrying HPV infection
  • Those experiencing irregular vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharge
