What is Pregnancy Follow-Up?
Pregnancy follow-up includes regular examinations, tests, and ultrasound evaluations performed from the beginning of pregnancy until birth to protect the health of the mother and baby.
The aim is to preserve the mother’s overall health and ensure that the baby is born in a healthy way.
In cases of suspected pregnancy or on the 14th day after IVF treatment, the blood test (Beta hCG) confirms the pregnancy.
When the test result is positive, the pregnancy follow-up process begins.
How is Pregnancy Follow-Up Performed?
Pregnancy follow-up may be performed at different frequencies depending on singleton or multiple pregnancy conditions.
Generally, the following stages are followed:
- From the 2nd week of pregnancy:
The gestational sac is visualized by ultrasound. It is checked whether the sac is inside the uterus.- If there is an ectopic pregnancy (extrauterine pregnancy), the pregnancy is terminated.
- If it is inside the uterus, routine pregnancy follow-up continues.
- Weeks 4–6:
Fetal heartbeat is detected by vaginal ultrasound.
During the same period, general health screenings are performed for the expectant mother:- Blood sugar
- Thyroid functions
- Blood incompatibility test
- During the first 3 months (1st trimester):
The expectant mother is called for examination every 2–3 weeks.
In IVF pregnancies, the process generally progresses in the same way.
Tests and Procedures Performed During Pregnancy Follow-Up
Various tests are performed during pregnancy to evaluate the health of the mother and baby:
- Blood and urine tests: Pregnancy hormones, blood sugar, hemoglobin levels, and infection checks.
- Ultrasound examinations:
- Baby’s development
- Heartbeat
- Organ development
- Amniotic fluid and placenta location
- Screening tests:
- Double screening test (11–14 weeks): Down syndrome risk is evaluated.
- Triple screening test (16–18 weeks): Chromosomal anomaly risk is determined.
- Detailed ultrasonography (20–24 weeks): Organ development and structural anomalies are examined.
- Glucose loading test (24–28 weeks): Gestational diabetes is screened.
- NST (Non-Stress Test) (from week 36): The baby’s heartbeat and contractions are monitored.
Pregnancy Follow-Up Process (Week by Week)
| Pregnancy Week | Procedure / Test | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 2–4 | Ultrasound examination of the gestational sac | Ectopic pregnancy control |
| Weeks 5–6 | Heartbeat control | Confirmation of fetal viability |
| Weeks 10–14 | Nuchal translucency measurement and double test | Chromosomal disease risk |
| Weeks 16–18 | Triple screening test | Genetic screening |
| Weeks 20–24 | Detailed ultrasound | Organ development control |
| Weeks 24–28 | Glucose loading and blood incompatibility test | Gestational diabetes and Rh compatibility |
| Weeks 28–36 | Routine controls | Monitoring blood pressure, weight, and urinary tract infection |
| Weeks 36–40 | NST and birth planning | Birth preparation and determination of delivery method |
Pregnancy Follow-Up in IVF Treatment
The blood test (Beta hCG) performed approximately 15 days after the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) procedure indicates the presence of pregnancy.
In pregnancies achieved through IVF, the follow-up protocol is the same as natural pregnancy.
However, depending on multiple pregnancy or the mother’s health condition, check-ups may be performed more frequently.
The most important point to consider during this process is to not miss the examinations recommended by the doctor and to ensure that medications are used regularly.
Importance of Pregnancy Follow-Up
Thanks to pregnancy follow-up:
- The mother’s health status is regularly monitored,
- The baby’s development process is closely followed,
- Possible pregnancy complications (miscarriage, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc.) are diagnosed early,
- Birth planning is performed safely.
Regular doctor check-ups are of vital importance for both mother and baby health.
